Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorportated

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on Friday, January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C by five coeds. The women dared to to depart from the original coalitions for Black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on four principles: Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. For 95 years, the trail blazed by the Founders, our Five Pearls, has been traversed by thousands of women dedicated to the emulation of the objectives and ideals of the sorority.

 

Since its inception, the Sorority has expanded to encompass more than 700 graduate/collegiate chapters and consists of over 100,000 members. These chapters are located throughout the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Korea, the Bahama Islands, Eastern Caribbean Islands, West Africa, Monrovia, Liberia and Germany and are organized into Nine Regions. The Sorority is the first national sorority to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); to form adult and youth auxiliary groups, the Amicae (175 groups), Pearlettes (4-8yrs.) Amicettes (9-13yrs.), and Archonettes (high school ages); and to be constitutionally bound to a brother fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Zeta's national and local programs include endowment of its National Education Foundation, community outreach services, and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary groups have given an abundance of immeasurable hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change. A non-profit, action oriented, community-conscious organization, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is incorporated in Washington, D.C. March 30, 1923 and in the state of Illinois in 1939. The Sorority is supported by the dues and gifts of its members.

 

The purpose of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is to foster the ideas of service, charity, scholarship, civil and cultural endeavors, sisterhood and finer womanhood. These ideals are reflected in the sorority's national program for which its members and auxiliary groups provide voluntary service to staff, community outreach programs, fund scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change.
